Promoting nature-friendly farming for safe food production

A day-long training and planning workshop on preparing organic pesticides, vermicompost, and natural fertilizers was held at Paschim Jelekhali village in Munshiganj Union of Shyamnagar Upazila. The event was organized by BARCIK with support from Oxfam.

Eighteen participants including youth, farmers, women, Agroecology Learning Center (ALC) members, and Shatobari practitioners participated in the workshop which was held recently.

The training was presided over by Purnima Barman, coordinator of the Jelekhali Agroecology Learning Center. Participants learned practical methods for producing safe organic pesticides, making homemade vermicompost, and improving soil fertility using organic fertilizer aimed at reducing chemical dependency and promoting sustainable agriculture. They also planned to apply these methods in their homesteads and farmland to reduce costs and improve crop quality.

BARCIK’s Regional Coordinator, Ramkrishna Jowarder, said that such regular training initiatives will continue to promote ecological farming, reduce dependency on chemicals, and strengthen community self-reliance. Participants expressed their commitment to applying the knowledge gained and contributing to safe food production in their communities.

The session was facilitated by Shonkar Mrong, Associate Regional Coordinator of BARCIK Netrakona Resource Center. Throughout the day, he demonstrated hands-on preparation of vermicompost, solid and liquid fertilizers, quick compost, green manure, and natural pest control solutions. The workshop concluded with active participation and enthusiastic engagement, moderated by BARCIK’s Barsha Gain.
