Training on ‘Hajol’ poultry rearing held Shymanagar

By Monika Paik from Shymnagar Satkhira

A hands-on training session on the preparation and use of Hajal (a locally made nesting and feeding system for brooding hens) was held recently at Khashkata village of Burigoalini Union under Shyamnagar Upazila, with the support of BARCIK.

The training was organized at the Khashkata Agroecology Learning Centre and was chaired by its supervisor, Molina Rani. The session was facilitated by BARCIK officer Monika Paik, while Alpona Rani Mistry, President of Dhumghat Shapla Women Development Organization, served as the main trainer. A total of 24 male and female farmers from Khashkata village received the practical training.

Trainer Alpona Rani explained that the use of Hajol allows brooding hens to access food and water easily without leaving their nests. Two containers are placed on the Hajal, one for water and one for feed that enables hens to eat and drink simultaneously. This keeps them healthy and supports successful chick production.

She added that Hajol can be made at very low cost using locally available materials and helps ensure higher survival rates of chicks hatched from eggs. The system enables women to earn income from home and contributes to household economic security.

Alpona Rani mentioned that regular cleaning and daily supply of fresh food and water are essential for effective use. Use of Hajol reduces egg spoilage, maintains the body weight of hens, and increases the supply of both eggs and meat. It can play a significant role in improving farmers’ livelihoods and socio-economic conditions through sustainable backyard poultry rearing-she added.
