With the support of BARCIK, members of the Manta Women’s Organization of Manikganj Sadar and Ghior Upazilas observed World Soil Day under the slogan, “Say No to Pesticides, Practice Organic Farming.”

The program was chaired by Renu Begum, President of the Manta Women’s Organization, and conducted by member Yasmin. BARCIK official Subir Kumar Sarkar delivered the welcome address, highlighting the importance and relevance of World Soil Day. He said that environmental degradation is endangering plant and biodiversity, and increasing organic farming practices is essential to protect soil and human health. He also discussed about the importance of reviving traditional, nature-based pest control methods.
Speakers including Sumy Akhtar, Aklima Akhtar, Jahanara Begum, Bokula Begum, and Alpona Rani Sarkar discussed about soil diversity and its various uses, such as crop suitability, stove-making, pottery, and idol-making. They said that the presence of earthworms, crab soil, and mouse burrows indicates pesticide-free land.

The speakers mentioned that in areas such as Manta, Helachia, Joynagar, and Kunduria, traditional deep-water Aman rice and Khesari crops are still cultivated, which reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. They urged farmers to remain cautious against corporate seed and pesticide marketing and to protect their land from harmful inputs.
The program also aimed to educate children about soil diversity so that the younger generation grows up with awareness of soil conservation and sustainable agriculture.
