Spice cultivation profitable for farming families

A field day was held at a spice research plot in Joynagar village of Manikganj Sadar Upazila recently, organized by BARCIK.

Under the supervision of Alpana Rani Sarkar, seven local spice varieties such as coriander, black cumin, fenugreek, fennel, radhuni, sweet mustard, and cumin were cultivated at the plot. Safflower flowers were also grown around the plot.

The event was chaired by Bakula Begum, a woman farmer from Shotobari village. Farmers’ group members and students from Begomnogor, Joynagar, and Manta villages participated in the event.

Subir Kumar Sarkar, Associate Programme Officer of BARCIK, explained the objective of the field day. Parvin Akter, a woman farmer from Manta village, said spice cultivation is profitable for farming families and can be grown along field boundaries, reducing production costs.

Participants visited the research plot and learned about different spices. They expressed hope that the initiative will encourage more farmers to grow spices.
