A 12-year-old girl, Chetana Mondal, was saved from child marriage in Shyamnagar through the collective efforts of local community members, a Civil Society Organization (CSO), and BARCIK.
The incident took place in Baro Kupot village under Atulia Union, where preparations were underway for the girl’s marriage. After receiving information from local CSO members, BARCIK staff and community representatives visited the family and discussed the harmful impacts and legal consequences of child marriage. Initially, the family remained determined to proceed with the marriage.

On the scheduled day, local communities, CSO members, and BARCIK representatives intervened again and facilitated a dialogue involving both families, community leaders, and concerned citizens. They explained that marrying a 12-year-old child is a punishable offense under Bangladeshi law and highlighted the social, educational, and health risks associated with child marriage.
Following the discussion, Chetana’s parents agreed to cancel the marriage and publicly committed not to arrange her marriage before she reaches adulthood. Community members also pledged to support the family and protect the child’s future. Representatives from the groom’s side expressed their opposition to child marriage and withdrew from the arrangement.

The girl later received counseling on her rights, education, and future opportunities. Local community highly appreciated the role of the CSO and BARCIK in preventing the marriage and promoting child protection. Community members said that strong local organizations can play a significant role in reducing social problems and protecting children’s rights.
The event concluded with the family expressing gratitude to everyone involved in safeguarding their daughter’s future.
